The Death Certificate

Originally published in Malayalam as Maranacertificate, The Death Certificate by P. Sachidanandan (pen name: Anand) is a stark, philosophical novel that explores the bureaucratic absurdity and existential dread surrounding death. Set in a crematorium and municipal office, the narrative follows a man’s struggle to obtain a death certificate for his deceased friend—unfolding into a meditation on identity, truth, and the dehumanizing machinery of modern institutions. Anand’s minimalist prose and haunting imagery make this a powerful critique of systemic indifference and spiritual emptiness
