The Stepchild 1st Edition

The Stepchild (Angaliyat) by Joseph Macwan, translated by Rita Kothari, is a landmark Gujarati novel first published in 1982 and later made available in English. It portrays the struggles of the Vankar community (Dalit weavers) in rural Gujarat, highlighting caste oppression, exclusion, and resilience. The title metaphor—angaliyat, the stepchild who follows the mother to a new home—captures the marginalization of Dalits within mainstream society.
