The story of Andrei Platonov (1899-1951), is typical of Soviet writers entering the literary scene with the October Revolution. Having spent the Civil war (1919-1921) on the front in the rank of the Red Army, he went to college, worked as an electrical engineer, and drained the marshlands, built canals and hydropower stations. The whole of the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) he covered as a war correspondent in the very thick of the fire.
