This book is an attempt to trace the long and complex path traversed by mankind from primitive tribal society at the dawn of history down to the present day.

What are the factors underlying historical development the interminable succession of rulers and governments, the sudden flowering and subsequent collapse of civilization and states? What exactly is meant by “progress”? The authors have tried to answer these questions to the best of their ability in the space available in this Short History.

However, as the title suggests, the book claims to be no more than a brief survey of the major events and political figures.
