In India the question of need was not asked in polite literature until Mulk Raj Anand posed it in the early ‘thirties.

Coolie (1936) shares with Untouchable (1935) not only Anand’s social angers, but also its immense popularity the two novels have been translated into more than twenty world language. The classical unities of the previous work are no longer preserved; the exigencies of the plot are swiftly dismissed, the canvas is much wider and the characters more varied.
