Book Description
This is a story about Hiru, an Adivasi woman from the scarcity-hit Panchamahals District of Gujarat. On the surface, it is a heartbreaking tale of unimaginable physical and mental torture, sexual abuse and spiritual degradation. But ir is a complex, many-layered story. On one level, it is about growing up as a tribal girl in perhaps the most underdeveloped district of Gujarat, and about adjusting to the harshness of urban life in modern India. On another level it is a tale of a woman's fight against antiquated social structure and outdated legal system of the land for her economic freedom and for ger children. But above all, it is the moving story of a woman's enormous courage in the face of insurmountable odds.
