Child is the first book of the autobiographical novel contemplated by L. N. Tolstoi. It was to be emitted Four Epochs of Development.

L. Tolstoi was only able to complete three parts of the book: Childhood (1852); Boyhood (1854); and Youth (1857). The fourth part was never written.

Childhood tells the story of the early years of Nikolemka Irtenyev, of his first great grief, the loss of his mother, and of his life with his grandmother in town.
