Paul C. Vitz’s Psychology as Religion: The Cult of Self-Worship (first published in 1977, revised edition 1994, Eerdmans Publishing) is a trenchant critique of modern psychology. Vitz argues that much of contemporary psychology has evolved into a secular religion centered on self-worship, promoting individualism and self-fulfillment as ultimate values.
