I hope these essays reflect my enthusiasm for both the character and beliefs these original and often, brilliant men. I have no illusions about inescapable personal and arbitrary criteria either in their selection or in my interpretations. I believe these essays summarize much, but far from all, of the most penetrating thinking done by Americans. I further believe that they reflect the most distinctive and the most clearly indigenous portion of that thought, at least before our present generation.
