Joseph Rudyard Kipling was born in 1865 in Bombay, where his father held a post at the School of Art.At the age of six, according to the normal custom of the time, he was taken home to England and spent several unhappy years in the charge of an unpleasant guardian before being sent to school at the United Services College in North Devon. His holidays were spent in the home of the artist Burne-Jones, his uncle by marriage. At seventeen he returned to India and Joined the staff of a newspaper in Lahore, where his father was now curator of the government museum.
