The arrival of Islam in India confronted the existing Hindu social and religious systems with a system which was equally definite and well-defined was set in a process of absorption, compromise and accommodation which forms the keynote of medieval Indian thought and history. In the field of religion, it provided a new impetus to the indigenous cult of bhakti, while the indigence of Hinduism considerably modified Sufism which came to India with Islam.
