In the year 1942, there was a proposal that I should go to Chungking to present a portrait of Rabindranath Tagore to the Chinese Government and have it unveiled by the Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek. On account of the August disturbances and other difficulties, the idea was dropped, though the portrait was sent and duly unveiled. It occupies the central position in the building of the Sino-Indian Society in Chungking, a symbol of the revived collaboration between the Chinese and the Indian cultures.
