An important dimension of security is the interface between civil society and governance. A broader understanding of security encompasses issues relating to good governance, which have a direct impact on the well-being of the citizen. The role of civil society is crucial in ensuring good governance. 

The Centre for Security Analysis has developed a new focus on Civil Society and Governance in Modern India and organized a national seminar on October 5-6, 2006 in Chennai. Among the issues discussed was the role of citizens in good governance, promoting fraternity through a uniform civil code, models for governance in the troubled periphery, diminishing accountability in civil society and government, ground level assessment of civil society and governance, challenges of globalization to civil society and governance and social inequalities in Indian society The proceedings of the seminar are covered in this book.
