The stories I have selected for this volume were all originally published – in the beginning, one of our chief aims was to print stories from European and other countries; and though during the war years the choice was narrower and the difficulty of finding anything of contemporary significance far greater, we kept our policy going without interruption. Many literatures and peoples were represented; but when I came to look through all the volumes at the end of our first ten years, I found that by far the largest contingent were French.
